Nobody likes cavities. They can be painful and expensive to treat, but there are ways to prevent, and even reverse, the tooth decay that causes cavities. Who wouldn’t want that?
Here are a few things you can do to help reverse tooth decay:
1. Use fluoride.
Fluoride can help prevent tooth decay and stop early decay. If your tap water doesn’t contain fluoride, make sure to purchase special fluoride toothpaste or visit us for a fluoride treatment.
2. Limit snacking.
Every time we eat sugar, the bacteria in our mouth produces acids from the sugar. These acids eat away at enamel, which protects our teeth. The less you snack, the less the bacteria can spread in your mouth.
3. Limit sugar itself.
Everyone knows that sugar causes cavities, but most people don’t realize that fruit juice, even 100% fruit juice, contains as much sugar as soda. Stay away from all sources of sugar as much as possible.
4. Brush twice a day.
Make sure that brushing is the last thing you do before you go to bed. If you don’t brush last thing before bed, the food you eat coats your teeth and leaves them susceptible to decay.
5. Refresh your toothbrush regularly.
A good rule of thumb is to change your toothbrush every three months. It’s all too common to use the same toothbrush for a year or more, but the longer you use them the less effective they become. Switching out your toothbrush is an easy way to improve oral health.
6. Consider dental sealants.
Sealants are plastic coatings on which cover grooves and small fissures on teeth and prevent bacteria from getting inside. Sealants can be an inexpensive investment in your dental health.
