Should My Jaw Pop When Eating Starburst or Skittles?

If your jaw pops while you eat Starburst, Skittles, or other candy you may be wondering why. This should not happen so if it does, there might be an issue with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This is one of the most important joints in your body. It connects your lower jaw to your temporal bones. Without your TMJ, you wouldn’t be able to talk, chew, and yawn.

In addition to jaw popping, a TMJ condition can cause pain or tenderness in the jaw, difficulty chewing, debilitating facial pain, and locking of the joint. The good news is there are a number of ways to treat it.

TMJ Disorder Causes

If you have TMJ disorder, it may be caused by a combination of factors. Trauma to your head, neck, and face and trauma to the TMJ joint itself may cause it. Hormonal changes and imbalances as well as stress and malocclusion or when the jaws don’t line up correctly.

TMJ Disorder Treatments

There are several non-medical treatments you can choose from. An over-the-counter medication may reduce inflammation. An ice pack to the affected area followed by a warm compress for several minutes may help as well. It’s also a good idea to avoid hard candy like Starburst or Skittles. Do your best to avoid singing, yelling, and other activities that open the mouth too wide.

Depending on the details of your condition, Dr. McNeely may prescribe a combination of TMJ treatments. These may include dental crowns, tooth reshaping, mouthguards, and splint therapy. Dental implants or orthodontics may also be effective solutions.
